Our History

Our Amish Roots

How we got started selling Amish furnishings.

By Candlelight Amish Furnishings was started by Sarah Jane Jones, a 25 year old Amish girl, who had a desire to help people furnish their homes with beautifully crafted Amish made furniture. By Candlelight was envisioned in April of 1996, with its beginnings in a farm house a mile outside of Rosebush, Michigan. The property was a working Amish dairy farm with another home for the minister and his family, and a one room Amish school house. After a year and a half, the farm was purchased by a young Amish couple, and By Candlelight Amish Furnishings found a new space to rent.

Amish Furniture Store

The building was previously a furniture store between Rosebush and Mt. Pleasant. Enjoying two prosperous years there, By Candlelight Amish Furnishing was then in a position to buy property on the expressway at the Rosebush exit of U.S. 127. An 8,000 square foot store was built to showcase the Amish furniture and crafts. In 2003, Sarah Jane married Steven P. Bye and moved to be with him in Traverse City. After commuting for a couple of months Steve and Sarah Jane decided to open another By Candlelight Amish Furnishings location in Traverse City. They found a space in downtown Traverse City nestled between Front and State streets, behind the City Opera House. Although the store was small, By Candlelight was very warmly accepted by the Traverse City community.

This allowed the Bye's the opportunity to purchase property a 5,000 square foot store on the corner of Front and Hall streets. Previously the home of the Great Lakes Children’s Museum, Sarah Jane and Steve renovated the building into a beautiful Amish furnishings showroom. Located next to North Peak Brew Pub and near the Lighting Center, By Candlelight Amish Furnishings is a part of the exciting growth of downtown Traverse City and its Warehouse District.

During more than 12 years in business, By Candlelight Amish Furnishings has enjoyed many positive changes and growth. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our loyal customers. We would not have made it this far without your support. Thank You.
